Pregnancy is filled with many wonderful moments of joy, anticipation, and naturally, a few questions along the way. One of the tests your physician might suggest as your pregnancy develops is known as a Biophysical Profile Score or BPS Obsteric Ultrasound, more commonly referred to as a BPS or simply a biophysical profile. It is typically administered via an ultrasound and serves to check in on how your baby is doing inside the womb.

Let’s now understand what BPS or BPS ultrasound is, and why your doctor (Gyneac) would recommend it.

Think of a Biophysical Profile as a gentle but comprehensive check-up for your baby during pregnancy. It’s a progress report from within the womb. It provides your physician with a better idea of how your baby is adjusting to life in the womb, particularly when the due date is approaching (typically performed after 32 weeks of gestation) or if there are any issues with the pregnancy. The BPS is non-invasive, painless, and consists of an ultrasound scan and, in some instances, a fetal heart rate monitoring session. Both collectively provide an instant snapshot of five essential fetal health indicators.\n

Fetal breathing movements :Yes, although your baby isn't yet breathing air, they practice breathing motions in the womb by taking small amounts of amniotic fluid in and out. This indicates healthy oxygenation and brain development.
Fetal body movements :Your baby's rolls, stretches, and kicks are more than cute; they're indicators of normal muscle tone and neurological function.
Fetal muscle tone :The test is for whether your baby is flexing and extending their arms and legs, which is a reassuring sign of maturity in the central nervous system.
Amniotic fluid volume :This is a measurement of how much protective fluid is around your baby. Too little or too much is a sign that something might be wrong, so this is carefully monitored.
Fetal heart rate reactivity :Occasionally checked through a separate test known as a non-stress test (NST), which assesses whether the baby's heart rate reacts to movement normally.

When and Why is an Ultrasound BPS Obstetric advised?

This ultrasound test is usually suggested towards the end of a pregnancy, typically in the third trimester, particularly if:

1 :You have a high-risk pregnancy (because of things such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or pre-eclampsia)
2 :Your baby is not developing as it should
3 :There's a reduction in fetal movements
4 :You're overdue
5 :There's been a prior pregnancy or delivery complication

In essence, the BPS Obstetric ultrasound helps reassure both you and your doctor that everything is on track or, if something looks off, it helps guide what to do next.

Let’s understand what the test results might indicate

6 :This is a bit of a gray zone. Your doctor will offer a repeat test in 24 hours or consider delivering if you’re close to term.
8 to 10 :This is a reassuring score. Your baby seems to be doing just fine.
4 or lower :This could mean that the baby isn't receiving enough oxygen or nutrients, and further evaluation or delivery may be necessary.

It's important to understand that a single score doesn't give the complete picture. Your doctor will always take the BPS into account along with other information such as how far along you are, your medical history, and other test results.

Let’s break down what happens during the ultrasound.

You'll be lying down, and a trained sonographer (the trained person who performs the ultrasound) will use an ultrasound probe to scan your baby. You may be asked to remain still and quiet for a period while they observe movements, tone of the muscles, and breathing activity. If a non-stress test is included in the BPS (Biophysical profile score), sensors will be attached to your abdomen to observe your baby's heart rate over time. The entire process will generally take 30 to 60 minutes.

The Biophysical Profile Score is a quick, harmless, and informative test that enables your doctor to check that your baby is healthy in the utero/womb. It's a reassuring check-up, especially in complicated or later-stage pregnancies, providing a distinct picture of your baby's health and readiness for delivery. If your gynecologist prescribes a BPS, it's not necessarily an indication of anything being wrong; it’s more like a precautionary test to ensure both you and your baby are in the best possible care.
