What is a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A more specific form of abdominal ultrasound is Pelvic Ultrasound, also known as USG pelvic sonography. While an abdominal ultrasound focuses on all the organs, structures, and blood vessels in the mid and lower abdomen region, including the liver, gallbladder, and others, a pelvic ultrasound focuses specifically on the pelvic region; the region between your legs and belly.

A pelvic ultrasound or pelvic echography is conducted to get a clear picture of the bladder, the uterus, cervix, and fallopian tube in women and the prostate in men. A pelvic ultrasound helps understand underlying issues such as:

1. In Women

1 -Pelvic Pain
2 -Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding
3 -Pain during sex
4 -Infertility
5 -Other Menstrual Problems
6 -Palpable masses like Ovarian Cysts and Uterine Fibroids
7 -Ovarian and Uterine Cancers

2. In Men

1 -Infections or cysts in the seminal vesicles
2 -Prostate cancer
3 -Testicular cancer
4 -Testicular or penile infection
5 -Testicular or penile injury

A pelvic ultrasound is also beneficial in bladder-related infections or issues, during biopsies, as it helps with real-time images of the organs, and/or for checking the position of IUDs(Intrauterine devices)

What are some types of Pelvic Ultrasounds?

Though a Pelvis Ultrasound is used to capture images of the pelvic region, it can still be divided into four broad categories based on its procedure or functionality.

Transvaginal Ultrasound :That is, ‘through the vagina’, is an ultrasound method that involves inserting a wand-like probe through the vagina to examine the organs in the female reproductive system.
Trans-rectal Ultrasound (TRUS) :It is mainly used to create images of the organs and surrounding areas in the rectum and prostate in men. A transrectal ultrasound is also helpful during biopsies.
Trans-abdominal Ultrasound :This is a non-invasive ultrasound method where the transducer, the device that emits sound waves, is moved around on the surface of the belly to get an image of the organs.
Pregnancy Ultrasound :This is used mainly to capture the baby's growth and the surrounding structures during pregnancy.

Things to keep in mind before getting a Pelvic ultrasound

When going ahead with a pelvic ultrasound, keep in mind to wear something comfortable and avoid wearing any jewellery. It is recommended to have a full bladder as it helps the sound waves travel easily, which eventually gives a clear image in the sonogram that the doctor can then explain to you. During a pelvic ultrasound, a sonographer applies gel to the pelvic region and then uses a special tool called a transducer. This small, wand-like instrument gives off sound waves. The transducer is connected to a screen that shows real-time images of the organs when your healthcare provider moves the transducer. When the transducer is glided over the gel, the sound waves bounce off certain types of tissues. They then return to the wand as echoes, and then the echoes are translated into images on the computer. These sonograms/ images are sent over to a radiologist, who examines them carefully and makes a diagnosis. This is then shared with your healthcare provider, who would then proceed with further actions based on your reports.
