About coagulation profile test

Why is the coagulation profile test done?

The coagulation profile test can be done to check whether the blood clotting process is happening properly or not. It can diagnose problems, including disseminated intravascular coagulation.

What does the coagulation profile test measure?

A coagulation profile test measures the activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time.

The partial thromboplastin time examines coagulation factors XII, XI, IX, VIII, X, V, II (prothrombin), I (fibrinogen), prekallikrein (PK), and high molecular weight kininogen (HK).

The activated partial thromboplastin time test is responsible for examining the coagulation factors VII, X, V, II, and I.

FAQs

What is the coagulation profile test?

A coagulation profile test can contain several other tests that measure prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), platelets, and fibrinogen to assess bleeding problems.

Prothrombin is a protein produced by the liver. Prothrombin time helps us to know the time taken by our blood to clot. It gets prolonged if someone has hemophilia, liver illness, or is taking blood-thinning medicine. Prothrombin time results are impacted by prothrombin protein deficiency. You can also take this test if you are taking anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin.

The prothrombin test can be combined with the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), which is also known as PTT (partial thromboplastin time).

The APTT test examines the process of blood clot formation and also the time taken for the same when a catalyst or reagent is added in the blood sample. The components that help in the blood clot formation process are also assessed.

Hemostasis occurs as a response to any injury caused to our tissues or the blood vessels walls. Platelets come together in the area where the damage occurs. This is aided by coagulation. Fibrin threads help in the formation of blood clots to stop the excessive loss of blood.

When is the coagulation profile test performed?

The coagulation profile test is performed:

  • If you are experiencing unexplained bleeding
  • If you’ve been bruised
  • If you have chronic illnesses, such as a liver disease
  • To check the efficacy of the treatment being given for stopping clot formations
  • Before surgery
How to prepare for the coagulation profile test?

No preparations are required for the coagulation profile test. However, before the test, do inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking.

How is the coagulation profile test performed?

The coagulation profile test is done by withdrawing a blood sample from your vein through the use of a needle. It can be performed at a preferred clinic, hospital, or a laboratory. Home test sample collection facilities are also available.

Interpreting the coagulation profile test results

Reference range:

PT: 9.57 s – 11.80 s

APTT: 23.57 s – 29.33 s

  • An extended prothrombin time with a normal activated partial thromboplastin time can indicate several problems:
Liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, factor VII deficiency, chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation.
  • A normal prothrombin time with an extended activated partial thromboplastin time can indicate several problems:
Hemophilia A or B, Factor XI deficiency, von Willebrand disease, Factor XII deficiency, having lupus anticoagulant.
  • If both prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time are extended, you can have the following problems:
The defective factor I, II, V or X, liver disease, acute disseminated intravascular coagulation.

If your coagulation profile test results are abnormal, you can go for other tests, including platelet count, thrombin time, fibrinogen blood test, coagulation factor tests, lupus anticoagulant test, von Willebrand factor test, etc.
