CBCMP test is a combination of two tests – a complete blood count test and a malarial parasite test. It gives us an assessment of all the major components of our blood, such as platelets, WBCs, RBCs, etc, and also looks for the presence of malaria parasites in it.
Malaria can typically be cured if detected and treated early. If a proper treatment is not undertaken, malaria can severely affect our liver and RBCs, causing renal failure, hepatic failure, internal haemorrhage, seizure disorder, mental confusion, coma, wet lung, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, neurological problems, and even death.

The CBCMP test is also done to check the efficacy of the treatment or medicines being given if you have already been diagnosed with malaria.
CBCMP test is used to measure the quantity of blood cells present in the body. These are red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. It is also used for detecting the presence of plasmodium parasites in the blood for diagnosing malaria disease or plasmodium infection.
No side effects are associated with a CBCMP test, although, for a few days, some pain might be felt in the area from where the blood is taken using a needle. Covering it with a bandaid reduces the chances of an infection. Prevent doing any heavy physical activity for a couple of hours after the test.

A CBC test is conducted if you’re experiencing the following symptoms:
CBC tests are also performed routinely if you’re undergoing chemotherapy.
If you exhibit symptoms of malaria, you should get a CBCMP test done. The majority of patients will develop symptoms within 14 days of getting infected. However, the symptoms can also occur as soon as seven days later, or may even take up to a year to appear. It is also possible to keep an inactive parasite inside the body for up to a year.
It is important to note that pregnant women can pass the infection to their foetus.
Infected people experience a wide range of symptoms. Some might show no signs at all, while others can experience severe sickness and even death.
These are the symptoms associated with cerebral malaria that the infected people might encounter:
No specific preparations are required for the CBCMP test. However, do inform your doctor about the first appearance of the symptoms associated with malaria, such as fever and chills. Moreover, before the CBCMP test, you can also inform your doctor about any underlying conditions or allergies that you have, or any drugs you are currently taking.
The CBCMP test involves taking a blood sample from a vein located in your arm. A syringe is used for the same. The area from where the blood would be taken would first be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Once the blood sample has been collected, it will be sent to the laboratory.
The components of the blood have their own respective normal ranges. If the test results show them within these levels, your reports are okay. However, if your results are lower or higher than their normal ranges, they will be considered as abnormal.
BLOOD COMPONENT | NORMAL RANGE |
White blood cells | 4500-11000 per microliter |
Red blood cells | 4.9 million – 5.9 million for men; 4.1 million – 5.1 million for women |
Haemoglobin | 14 – 17.5 gm/dL for men; 12.3 – 15.3 gm/dL for women |
Platelet Count | 150,000 – 450,000 per mcL |
Mean Corpuscular Volume | 80 – 96 fL |
A negative CBCMP test result means that you don’t have malaria disease. However, you may need to go for a retest if you have malaria symptoms, but the test findings were negative. The malaria parasite in the collected blood sample could be absent.
The amount of malaria parasites in the body might fluctuate. So, throughout the course of two to three days, your doctor may advise CBCMP tests every 12-24 hours for properly diagnosing malaria and prescribing a treatment plan.
If your test results are positive, your doctor will prescribe medication to address the condition. The sort of treatment you receive will be determined by your age, the severity of your malaria symptoms, and whether or not you are pregnant.
