ADA, or Adeno Deaminase test in Delhi or any other city in India, is one of the most crucial tests in fighting and curing tuberculosis. ADA is a protein produced by our body to activate white blood cells to protect itself against any infection. The ADA test is used to measure the ADA levels inside the body. This is majorly done to detect the presence of TB (tuberculosis), which increases the level of ADA inside the body. The test also detects if the TB has spread to the lungs.

AN OVERVIEW

About Adeno Deaminase (ADA) Test

Why is the ADA test done?

The test is done to detect the presence of tuberculosis inside the body. The symptoms of TB include the following:

  • Coughing for three or more weeks
  • Coughing up blood or mucus
  • Chest pain
  • Pain while breathing or coughing
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Sweating at night
  • Random chills in the body
  • Loss of appetite

If any of these symptoms are seen  in a patient, they are advised to take medical assistance and get the ADA test done as soon as possible. TB is dangerous, and apart from the lungs, it can also spread to other organs, like the kidney or brain.

What does the ADA test measure?

ADA is short for Adeno Deaminase. This is a protein or enzyme produced by the body in response to an infection. It activates the white blood cells to help the body fight against said infection.

The most common disease that it detects is tuberculosis.
During the spread of infections like tuberculosis, the body produces higher amounts of ADA. Therefore, even though the test is not definitive, it is coupled with other tests to get a clear estimation of tuberculosis bacteria in the inner linings of the lung. One of the major signs of TB in the lungs is fluid accumulation leading to excessive coughing or difficulty in breathing.

The ADA test is a blood test in which the level of Adenosine Deaminase in the blood is checked. If higher levels of ADA are found in the blood, a doctor should be contacted immediately.

Risk/Side-effects of ADA test

Generally, there is very less risk of any major symptoms inside the body. The person might feel slight pain (or some bruising) in the area where the needle has been pierced to draw the blood. But these tend to disappear pretty quickly and not cause any major problems to the patient. In very rare cases, the patient might have blood collection under the skin or develop infection at the site where the needle was pierced. But these are very rare occurrences and nothing major to worry about.

Interpreting the Adeno Deaminase (ADA) Test Results

The ADA level in the pleural fluid is the major thing that is to be checked here. If the amount of ADA in the pleural fluid is much higher than what is supposed to be the normal range, that is an indication of mycobacterium tuberculosis in the inner linings of the lungs.

While that is the most common reason, there could be other abnormalities that might be causing higher levels of ADA – sarcoidosis, pulmonary embolus, lupus, or even cancer. These are generally seen when the level of ADA is moderately high, as opposed to TB, when the level is dangerously high.

If the ADA level is low, it could indicate that the person is not suffering from TB, but nothing can be said for sure. There should be other tests done alongside to make sure that the person is safe. If there are any problems, contact a doctor immediately.
